It was one hundred years after the French Revolution when the French public began to realise what a treasure they had in the Palace of Versailles. This unique exhibition aims to capture the excitement, nostalgia, curiosity and passion that began to grow for Versailles during this period.

With over 350 works on display, the exhibition reflect an incredible time for Versailles when it took its true place in history for art, literary works and music.  Over this period Versailles gained a reputation and it’s influence can be seen all over the World.   It was also used by the French Republic as a place to hold assemblies, receive foreign dignitaries as well as a popular place for aristocratic parties.

During the same time the Palace was also popular with the public, and even whilst undergoing an extensive programme of revival and restortation, in 1937 the palace received it’s millionth visitor.

The exhibition is being held in the Africa and Crimea rooms and tells contrasting stories.  The first delves into the story of the Palace’s restoration, the second celebrates the Palaces new found popularity at the turn of the 20th century.
